New ideas for the club...

Got any ideas of things we could do at the club?

Did you enjoy the ground fighting with Sensei Danny and want to do more?

Do you miss doing kata or weapons?

Should we spend one evening a month doing just weapons or just part of a lesson?

Would you want to learn weapon and open-hand kata and then grade so they can be signed off in your Budo pass?

Learn more throws left handed?

Juniors - more locks for the higher grades?

Have a self-defence night where we all wear normal clothes?

Post your ideas here!

Realistic Street Self Defence

I would be interested in doing some regular realistic street self defence as close to the real thing as we can get but in a safe training environment possibly wearing normal clothes & trainers.

For example:
Defend against a 2-4 man street robbery.
Defend against knife attacks and threats of a knife.
Defend against a street attacker/s who just keeps coming back for more.
Hold and restrain an abusive drunk / attacker (untill help comes).
Defend against multilple attackers (all at the same time)
Prison / Police Officer restraining and control techniques.
Defend against common street weapons like baseball bats, extendable battons, knifes, swords & knuckle dusters ect...
How to deal with & defend against abusive people who are out looking for a fight on the street or in a pub.
Defend against people with weapons who are trained to use them.
Counter techniques for arm & wrist locks.

Your thoughts please.

Realistic Street Self Defence

Some interesting suggestions there.

We often do defence against knife attacks and restraint and control is a big part of jujitsu, most of our locks can be used for that (some are designed to break a joint).

Defending against batons, sticks and baseball bats are covered too - the idea is to either get in close for a throw and disarm, or else keep well away.

Jujitsu gives you a range of techniques from pure control to serious injury depending on the situation. Permanently disabling an attacker so they won't attack again is quite acceptable. The law will be behind you so long as you stick to reasonable force. If they pull a knife or a gun you are in fear of your life. In that case anything goes as far as defending yourself or someone else.

Remember the best defence is not to be there - get away if you can. Be aware and ready to react when entering a volatile situation, rather than talking on your phone or listening to music.

If people are abusive, and looking for a fight, don't rise to it. Find another pub. It's really, really not worth it. If you feel you should 'teach them a lesson' and they pull a knife, you're the one looking silly (and dead).

A 2-4 man robbery? Give them your wallet and live.

Jujitsu gives you an edge. It doesn't make you invulnerable. You should learn awareness and avoid a confrontation if you can - you should only fight if all other options are closed.

Club Ideas

I for one would love to do some weapons techniques and kata. Any idea if this can be arranged?

Weapons and kata

We have lots of defence against weapons (knives and sticks), but Jujitsu (at least our style) doesn't have a lot of kata or use of weapons, but there are a few we have. They are:

  • six open hand katas
  • two jo katas
  • a bo kata
  • a nunchaku kata

They all appear in the black belt grades, apart from one of the open hand katas - the novice kata of blocks which is on White belt.

We could use kata as a cool down at the end of a lesson for 10 minutes or so. Sometimes we'll get out the jos and do weapons, but we haven't for a while - soon might be a good time...

Sparring and Groundfighting

I think we should do some ground fighting and sparring at least once a month. Nothing too heavy but done in a good training way, like attacker and defender stuff. I have sparred before and currently at the gracie school and they do sparring sessions, stand up and on the ground with one acting as attacker, and the other purely defense. In my experience this is a good teaching method as some of the competition is taken away because both parties aren't trying to win.

I also think that without sparring and competition, you will never know how to apply it in the real world and if you always use your techniques on a passive Uki, then you don't really know if they work.

Just my 2 pence worth........

Sparring, Groundfighting, Kata, Syllabus, Weapons...

Yes, we should try to do this more often. We need to make sure people who only come one day a week get a go too.

First session of the month (whether it is a Monday or a Friday) is groundfighting and sparring perhaps ? The last one of the month is always kata/weapons? As long as it's marked on the registration sheet, we can let students know in advance. We can then see how popular they are if no-one turns up.

The same goes for weapons or kata sessions. We could also spend one session a month going through the whole of a particular belt syllabus.

I've been thinking about this for quite a while now. I think that by doing more sparring sessions and ground fighting definately gives me more confidence when I have to use it for real, and for putting myself forward for competitions.

I'd personally love to see us doing this much more. Maybe we could do sparring and ground fighting twice a month instead? This would help me for when I can't make it because of shift work. Is this something we could trial for a few months to see how it gets on?

Hey there,

Geoff, love the new look for the site. Always nice to see something new. Love the idea of a forum. We should get some discussions going ASAP.

Ideas...

Yup, at the moment we are the only two members, but anyone can comment on most pages without having to join. Only members can start new topics though.

We had a good session with Danny the other night doing ground fighting which everyone seemed to enjoy. I'd like to do that more often - the same goes for weapons. Maybe get back to doing it once a month for juniors and adults. What do people think?

Not everyone likes pure competition, but doing more random attacks / multiple attackers is always good.

Apparently a new Aikido club may open in MK. Possibly even at Shenley. Could be interesting.
